Salem Lakes denies permit for fireworks store

The Salem Lakes Village Board denied a request for a conditional use permit to sell fireworks on a property on Antioch Road in the Cross Lake neighborhood.

The owner of the property at 12425 Antioch Road (Highway 83), Trevor, and Black Bull Fireworks of East Troy sought the permit.

The permit was rejected by the board after about 20 residents spoke on the topic during citizens comments. Thirteen of those speaking opposed the sales at that site, most citing concerns about the safety of the business being adjacent to residences.

Two of the people who spoke in favor of issuing the permit were the property owner and a Black Bull Fireworks representative.

Trustee Michael Culat moved to deny the permit and Trustee Bill Hopkins seconded it. The vote to deny was unanimous. The board did not discuss the issue before voting.

Black Bull was able to get approval to sell fireworks at the same site last year from a tent with stock storage in a shipping container. This year, the company had proposed extensive renovations to the former tavern building on the site — including a sprinkler system and firewalls — to allow the sale of fireworks from that structure.
