Person of interest in Paris death investigation leads police on high speed chase

A Brighton man who is a person of interest in the investigation of a death in Paris from last weekend led law enforcement officers on a high speed chase through Paris and into Racine County Friday afternoon.

The person of interest, identified as Andrew Obregon, 32, eluded deputies and is still at large, Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said at a press conference in Union Grove at about 6:45 p.m.

“We know that the public is extremely interested in what all of these squad cars are about and what they are looking for. We are diligently looking for him,” Beth said, adding that multiple sheriff’s units, tactical teams, state troopers and a helicopter are being used in the search. “We wanted to come out and let people know we are looking for any help we can get.”

Obregon is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, 185 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. He may be carrying a gun, Beth said, but he added that he does not believe Obregon poses a threat to the general public.

“Andy Obregon has told people that he knows that this will be a big show, that this will be a shootout, watch the news,” Beth said.

Fifty to 80 deputies are searching for Obregon this evening. He was last seen near Highways 45 and KR.

Obregon was spotted by a Kenosha County sheriff’s deputy at about 2:30 p.m. in the area of Highway JB and Highway 45 in Brighton driving a stolen 1988 black Ford Mustang. When a deputy attempted a traffic stop, Obregon fled, with deputies pursuing.

Obregon eventually headed north on Highway 45 toward Union Grove, at times reaching speeds of over 100 mph, Beth said. Deputies lost track of Obregon at about 3 p.m.

A relative of Obregon’s was arrested for obstructing this investigation and aiding a felon, Beth said.

Obregon may have abandoned the Mustang, perhaps in a farm field, Beth said, and his department is looking for any help in locating the vehicle.

“He likes to do a lot of things in fields and hide things,” Beth said.

At its height, the chase came into Union Grove just as Union Grove High School was to let out, with the homecoming parade set to take place after school. Knowing this, Racine County deputies stopped the pursuit in hopes Obregon would not go by the school at a high rate of speed, said Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling.

“If there was a blessing in disguise today, it was that this occured just before school was let out and before the homecoming event,” Schmaling said.

Plans were to do a reverse 911 call in Paris, Brighton and Union Grove explaining the search, Beth said.

Obregon is a person of interest in the death of Tywon Anderson, of Kenosha, who was found dead in Paris Sept. 26. Beth called Anderson and Obregon friends.

“We’d like to talk to Andrew Obregon about what he knows about the death investigation,” Beth said.

Since Obregon is an adept car thief, Beth recommended residents lock their vehicles and not leave their keys inside of them.
