The story revolves around the forthcoming marriage of Theseus, Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. At the Duke’s court, Egeus, father of Hermia, demands that she marry Demetrius (who formerly courted her friend Helena). Hermia loves Lysander and does not want to marry Demetrius; however, if she does not obey her father, she must suffer the consequences of Athenian law: to die or to live as a nun. The lovers run from Athens into the woods and that is where the fairy kingdom plays their tricks.
