Drivers in Twin Lakes will have a new way to get around the Main Street re-construction project.
The Village Board approved the building of a temporary road that will link the west end of Main Street to the municipal parking lot to the east. The road will cross the properties of chiropractor Mark Dull and developer Steve Mills and has their verbal approval.
The move to build the new road, which will be paved with reclaimed road materials, comes after another detour around downtown proved problematic in the past week.
“People are not doing what they’re supposed to be doing, which I see every day,” said village President Howard Skinner, whose business, Skinner’s Service, is located at the western edge of the construction zone.
The board included some restrictions on the road, including:
- 15 mph speed limit.
- Local traffic only.
- No heavy truck traffic.
- Possibly speed bumps.
Various stop signs and other signage will be placed at key points.
Particularly concerned about the problems caused by the Main Street detour were residents of the Pauley Street area, just south of downtown. Drivers looking for a short-cut around the construction have been driving through the neighborhood. only to find there is no way out to the east. The increase in traffic has been a concern, several residents who spoke at the meeting said.
“There was a tremendous amount of traffic,” said resident Jack Staudemeyer, a former village president. “Still is.”
Heavy truck traffic will be expected to continue to use the original detour route, which utilizes North Lake Avenue, Holy Hill Road and Highway Z.
