Snowmobile hits ice shanty on Paddock Lake

At 7:13 p.m., Salem Fire/Rescue units are responding to a report of a snowmobile crashing into an ice shanty on Paddock Lake.

Scanner transmissions say there are at least two injuries.

The shanty was reportedly occupied at the time of the crash. A fisherman in the shanty has made his way to the north shore private beach to meet fire/rescue personnel. The driver of the snowmobile is reportedly still on the lake. Crash scene is near the center of the lake.

UPDATE at 7:21 p.m. — ATVs from the Salem Wilmot station and Bristol Fire and Rescue have been called to the scene to aid response.

UPDATE at 7:32 p.m. — Silver Lake Rescue being called to the scene as well.

UPDATE at 7:38 p.m. — Silver Lake Rescue picking up patient at Senior Citizen Park.

UPDATE at 8:49 p.m. — Medical examiner responding to scene.

UPDATE at 10:11 p.m. — Other media sources are reporting that there is one death. UPDATE: Our post with identity and more details here.

    They were on the ice for a long time before they brought him in. Doesn’t look good.

    Darren, thank you for the very good commentary on CBS58. As a long standing advocate of safe snowmobiling in the Village I responded right after in an effort to get snowmobiles on scene to assist emergency personnel. What a terrible way to start the new year. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and his family.

    The victim was local resident and a good friend. His brother passed recently in a motorcycle accident in Burlington back in April. This is the second loss of a son to their mother this year. My heart goes out to her in these hard times.
