The man killed in a home invasion in Brighton early this morning has been identified by the Sheriff’s Department as Robin Leydel, 50, of Brighton.

The Sheriff’s Department also has four people in custody in connection with the incident. They are:

  • John M. Navigato, 50, of Bristol.
  • Teddy Bieker, 19, of Kenosha.
  • Brian Suchecki, 37, of Twin Lakes.
  • Richard Beeter, 54, of Lake Villa, Ill.
At least one deputy was still at the Leydel residence on Highway K in Brighton mid-morning Tuesday.

At least one deputy was still at the Leydell residence on Highway K in Brighton mid-morning Tuesday.

The four suspects were in a vehicle leaving the Leydel home that was seen by sheriff’s Deputy Joe Zarletti, who was responding to the scene. He followed the car west on Highway K to Highway 75, where it turned south. Near the interesection of Highway 50, Zarletti, now joined by another squad, put on his lights and the car pulled over in the 7600 block of Highway 83.

The suspects generally did not resist arrest, Zarletti said at a press conference in Kenosha this morning. Three guns were found in the vehicle.

Robin Leydell’s wife, Susan, called 911 while the invaders were still in the couple’s home at a little after midnight Tuesday. She spoke with dispatch for several minutes while the men were still in her home, even at one point shouting at the men to get out.

Sheriff David Beth commended Susan Leydel’s courage and presence of mind to keep dispatch informed of what was happening. He said the information was key in apprehending the suspects so quickly.

“Without that who knows how long we would have looked for them,” Beth said at the press conference.

Beth said Robin Leydel was shot once in the chest. He informed Susan Leydell of Robin Leydel’s death at about 4:30 this morning.

Both Robin Leydel and Navigato were Central High School classmates of Beth, the sheriff said.

“Sometimes we always think it always happens to other people,” Beth said. “This time it happened to people I know.”

The suspects are still being interviewed by investigators. They may yet have a bond hearing today, Beth said.
