Salem Booster Club working on restoring extracurriculars

salem-booster-clubThe newly formed Salem Booster Club continues to make progress toward restoring extracurricular activities at Salem School.

“The public support is overwhelming, and it is a certainty that the programs cancelled by the school due to budget constraints will be provided under the Salem Booster Club,” said club President John Philippi.

In recent weeks, the club has named officers, started fundraising and tackled numerous other tasks such as:

  • Drafting  by-laws.
  • Submitting a non-profit 501(c)(3) application.
  • Securing a website — www.salemboosterclub.com.
  • Getting acceptance into the Westosha Conference for sports.

Dan Derler has agreed to seve as the club’s athletics director. A director for clubs is still being sought.

The club is meeting on Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m., at the Community Library, Salem site,  Highways AH and 83, every week until school starts.

The Booster Club formed in the wake of a fourth failed tex levy referendum in April. With that failed referendum, the School Board was forced to make staff cuts as well as cut funding for all extracurricular activities.

The club was formed as a way to revitalize extracurriculars by providng funding outside of the tax levy. It is the first such effort in an area school district to provide all extracurricular funding.
