French families, friendliness, food impress Central students

Central High School's International Club poses outside of the palace in Versailles.

Members of the International Club at Central High School back from a trip to France over spring break are full of memories of interacting with a different culture.

The students left Paddock Lake April 7 and returned April 17. In between they spent five days in Aix-en-Provence in the south of France staying with local families. Then the group took the fast train TGV up to Paris for the last five days, staying in a hotel there.

After talking to most of the students who went, it seemed like the families they stayed with for the first leg of the trip made the strongest impression for many.

“My most favorite part of the trip was the family stay,” said Brandon Bockrath, Bristol. ” I got to meet some new people that I’m going to know for the rest of my life.”

“I’ll remember them for the rest of my life,” said Jocelyn Smith, Paddock Lake.

The students got around with a lot of walking and public transportation, Bockrath said. And they found their language skills handy, even if it was challenging for some  to keep up at first. Most thought it helped their French a lot.

And what about that impression that the French have a disdain for us?

“They don’t hate Americans,” said Emily Swanson of Bristol.

But let them tell you in their own words what was the most memorable part of their trip:

The club is led by French language teacher Julia Price. This was the club’s first such trip. Price would like to organize another in 2011.

Want to hear more? The students who went on the trip will present to International Club on Thursday, April 30 from 2:45 to 4 p.m. in the All Purpose Room at Central. The public is welcome. UPDATE: The date for the presentation has been changed to May 7, same time, same place.
